Treasure Hunt: SDCC's Best Toy Exclusives

Nab the freshest foursome of the con collectible crop

By name, San Diego Comic-Con is about comic books. By rep, it's a place that makes movie news. By the time you get there, the biggest lines will be for toy exclusives. Choose well and fetch a fortune on eBay. Choose poorly, and you'll end with a handful of landfill-choking chintz. Here's our fave four:

#1. Love is a Droog - Kubrick-inspired collectibles rarely happen. Retro Outlaw Studios' 12" autographed resin statue of Alex DeLarge from A Clockwork Orange will make non-attendees an envious green.

#2. His Name is Mud - Like Lobo a few years ago, Swamp Thing is considered too "mature" a character to sell in Kmarts across the country. For some fanboys, this'll be the first time they spend $30 on a vegetable.

#3. Bear Market -Lost may be done, but what collection would be complete without a bobble-head of the greatest supporting character ever: the polar bear! Like you, he just keeps nodding as the plot twists pile up.

#4. The Mane Event - Three decades on, the great crossover battles of '80s toy boxes can be relived in style, as Bandai releases Thundercats' Classic Lion-O in a scale and style similar to the recent He-Man relaunch. Goofy yelling action not included.

Sunday=Funday?

So for those of you who have noticed, I'm going to admit that I've set some posts to post automatically at noon and I've been forwarding some of the GeekChicDaily emails and such forward while I try to figure out the direction for this site. I'm going to be having a meeting with a friend soon to figure out the angle of this site.

Happy Birthday Dad!

It's a quiet Saturday with not much to go on about this week. But what I can do is wish a Happy Birthday to my dad. My father actually was taught by the comic legend, Will Eisner at the School of Visual Arts and worked for Will during the '70's. That's pretty cool if you ask me.

My dad is probably the reason why I am into science fiction and a lot of bad SyFy channel TV shows and movies but HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!

Re: Danny Elfman's Cirque Du Nightmare!

Ok, I love Oingo Boingo. I love The Nightmare Before Christmas. I love Danny Elfman. I... like the circus. Put all this together though? I think I might have a heart attack!

The Elfman Cometh to Cirque du Soleil

Plus: Would Danny ever do a Nightmare Before Christmas stage musical?

Best known for his collaborations with Tim Burton, Danny Elfman faces a whole new challenge soon: the circus. Did you know he's scoring Cirque du Soleil's new show IRIS? Get more detail in GeekChicDaily's full-length Danny Elfman Cirque interview. An excerpt appears below:

GeekChicDaily: How is scoring this project different than working with film?

Danny Elfman: There's no story that I'm following, no dialogue at all, it's just music and image, like you're watching a silent film with the score played with it...I don't have to pay attention to time and place.

GCD: Could we ever see The Nightmare Before Christmas on stage?

DE: Tim [Burton] and I have actually talked about that. Tim thinks - and I agreed with him at that point - that it wouldn't be serviced well on a stage, but I don't know. Stage shows of material like that are a very tricky thing.

GCD: Is there any subject matter that's particularly close to your heart that you'd like to do?

DE: It's just a question of the right material. I would love to do something twisted, of course.

Scare up our full interview with Danny Elfman and check out Iris in Hollywood at the Kodak Theater. Previews begin July 21st.

Randomness of the Internet... and about DC Comics...

I have to thank the above link for this find as the article found here. http://www.supermanhomepage.com/news.php?readmore=9988 gives a lot of thought about Digital Verses Hard Copy for comic books.  His conclusion:
Digital comic books are arguably the way of the future. New readers (those who don't currently buy comic books) will likely jump on board the digital revolution and enjoy the ease with which they can buy the latest comic book offerings. They won't worry about the whole "collecting" side of things. They'll just read the stories and enjoy the artwork like they do any other type of reading material they might buy.
Personally I will always prefer the traditional life of "Ink on Paper."
