NERDSWAG: Red Tails on Blu-ray! Plus the Director Speaks
Anthony Hemingway talks Tuskegee, trilogies and tales untold.
![]()
If you missed Red Tails in the theater because you thought a historical movie wasn't your speed, think again. As action-packed as everything else you've come to expect from Lucasfilm, the aerial combat flick arrives on Blu-ray this week and we're giving away five Blu-ray combo packs so you can rectify the omission, or relive the adventure if you caught it the first time. (Target some bonus entries at our Facebook, Twitter and Google + pages.) To help get you pumped up for more sky swooping, we talked to the film's director, Anthony Hemingway.
N: Red Tails is one hell of an auspicious feature directorial debut. How did it all come about?
AH: You know, it was just kind of one of those big rainbows that came across the sky and blew up, and a bunch of nuggets came down, and Lucky Charms rained...I'm kidding. It started off with a phone call from George Lucas wanting to meet with me. He'd seen my work on The Wire, and I was part of a host of great directors that he was looking at and interviewing to help with this project. We met, and from a series of meetings and a presentation - that I went in to basically sell my conviction and desire and passion for wanting to helm this project - they hired me.
N: We understand you're a big fan - at one of the meetings, you ended by saying, "May the Force be with you"?
AH: Oh my god, I walked out of that meeting after I said that and completely wanted to jump off the fifteenth floor of that building. He got a good laugh out of it. So at least I walked away feeling somewhat at ease, but I still felt like the biggest dork walking out of there, like, okay, I could not have been a bigger geek, saying that phrase.
N: This movie doesn't over-sentimentalize the way a lot of historical dramas do - it really focuses on the action aspect. Was it a tricky balance between being reverential to your heroes versus getting quickly to the action and making it kickass?
AH: Well, you know it always is a challenge, especially when you're dealing with fact and history, and stories that are known for so many years. But it's one of the things that George said from day one, that he really wanted to tell a story about heroes and not victimization. One of the great benefits was the HBO film (The Tuskegee Airmen), because they kinda set the platform and told the history of it and really the beginning. So we really had the awesome opportunity to just focus on the heroics of them and have fun with it. One of the things that I got to really see, that the surviving airmen really shed light on, when I got to meet them, was the childlike qualities in them. Even to this day, they're still so vibrant, and have so much energy. Getting that opportunity just to sit and talk to them, I got to delve into who they were, and really connect with them on that level. And I think that really helped channel their spirit, just ignited everything that we wanted to do, which was really make this a fun, awesome experience.

Star Trek Captains Reunite at Philadelphia Comic Con?
This came in my email from Wizard World. It looks like a great Con to go to but I honestly don't think I want to see the line up of Star Trek that much. Anyone going?

Tunes for Tuesday: Alien Ant Farm
Very few bands can be iconic with a one hit wonder that was a Michael Jackson cover. Alien Ant Farm finds themselves in that spot of 'Man, I remember you. Smooth Criminal. What else you got? Oh, this is catchy. And good.'
From what I understand, they have only had three albums and a best of type. About 40 songs in their discography and a new alum promised to be coming out later this Spring/Summer time. Definitely worth checking out.

Blimey! It's Slimer!
I recently acquired a collected comics edition of the old Blimey! It's Slimer mini strips that used to appear in the weekly Real Ghostbusters comic, published by Marvel UK. Each strip was mainly half an A4-sized page, but later promoted to a whole page in some issues.
This version of Slimer has its own unique take and on off extra characters exclusive to the canon. Mainly, this was just a humor slot like the newspaper funnies.

Fiendish Feet Advertisement (1988)
I had a few of these Yoghurt pots/toys. They doubled up as villain characters for my Real Ghostbusters toys to battle against. These blended in well and provided a great set of scary skittles for Ecto-1 to smash into. Good times!

The Old Republic-Great game, hard on my wallet
Yesterday I purchased Star Wars: The Old Republic for my PC, a Star Wars game that takes place thousands of years before the movies. It plays great, very addicting. I see why people are jumping over from World of Warcraft to it, especially since it's a subscription based game and the expansion possibilities are endless. Great for Star Wars nerds such as myself.
However, to run this game I sunk over $200 into my computer. I'm not complaining since my pc has higher end parts in it now. But don't expect to play this on a lower end machine either, at best you'll end up paying maybe $70 on a decent video card to run it. Don't expect to run it in high video specs either though if you pay that little for a card.
My final judgement? Great game, that fact that the game costs $60 then an additional $15 a month is a little pricey but it is an MMO after all with the Star Wars brand. Updates will also follow, as well as support for an already incredible looking game.

What is "DUBSTEP?"
I get it. It's a series of electronic sounds that are used to make music. Like in this video.
But every time I hear those sounds, I picture Michael Bay's Transformers moving in slow-motion. Am I the only one?

Elder Scrolls: Skyrim A Piece of Gaming Art
But it isn't the story that makes the game so great, it's the visuals and graphics. The mountains of the fictional region of Skyrim instead the world of Tamriel. It's a giant open world game with tons of quests. Dragons fly around and swoop down to attack you on sight. Giants roam the lands with Mammoths. The game is truly one giant piece of computer animated art, and very addicting to play.
