Weekly Round-up: Digital Divas, Toonami Tune-Ups and MasterCard Magica
Plus the latest on the CW's proposed "Battle Royale" adaptation! MasterCard Magica - Would you like to make a contract? No, you won't become a magical girl, but Japanese fans can get an official Puella Magi Madoka Magica credit card from MasterCard by signing on Kyubey's dotted line. Cardholders will be entered to win one of 200 special passes to this fall's Madoka films and will receive one of eight special character cards each month. An enticing offer to be sure, but what hidden fees and supernatural witch combat lie beneath Kyubey's beady red eyes and adorable pokerface?
Digital Divas Live - In case the prospect of copious amounts of pop music, an Evangelion pop-up museum and an Evangelion-inspired Real Escape Game weren't enough to entice you to go to New People's J-Pop Summit Festival in San Francisco on August 25-26th, then maybe a full-blown Vocaloid concert will. Vocalekt Visions will put on a live concert featuring HD holograms of Hatsune Miku and other Vocaloid stars, plus the music of producer Tempo-P and more. Throw in that hologram Tupac from Coachella and we can't book our tickets to the Bay Area fast enough.
Royale Misunderstanding - After a Hollywood Reporter article about the CW looking into adapting Japanese cult classic Battle Royale into a television series went viral, the Internet was up in arms. Has America's newfound obsession with kid-on-kid arena combat gone too far? Not quite; CW president Marc Pedowitz cleared the air, noting that the network made a phone call, but nothing else has happened. So rest easy, Internet, and save your pitchforkin' strength for the next time someone calls Battle Royale a Hunger Games rip-off.
Samurai Swap-Out - All good things must come to an end, which is why Deadman Wonderland will be ending its twelve-episode run on Toonami on August 12. Fortunately, Toonami isn't one to rest on their laurels; they're replacing the series with Samurai 7, a futuristic spin on Akira Kurosawa's iconic film Seven Samurai. What shows would you like to see come to Adult Swim's Toonami block? Let us know on Facebook, Twitter and Google+! | | | |
