Geek This Week: Torchwood Burns Bright

Plus - Gollum talks with Gaiman, Beer Archeology lifts spirits.

#1. Miracle Whipped - The adventures of Captain Jack Harkness and Torchwood continue on July 8. Putting Torchwood on a US cable channel means bigger budgets, action and dark, mature content. We've been fans of Torchwood since it started, though we're glad they renamed it. Calling it the The X-Files: London was cumbersome.

#2. Virgin Mobile - A young Chinese woman has offered to sell her virginity to anyone for an iPhone 4. She posted a picture and other information about herself on the Chinese version of Twitter after her father refused to buy her the Apple product. What is she going to sell when the iPhone 5 releases? A kidney? Don't answer that.

#3. Savage Smeagol - Sandman writer Neil Gaiman and Mythbusters' Adam Savage were recently on Minnesota Public Radio together. As it turns out, Gollum happened to be hanging out at Savage's house at the time and sang a rousing rendition of I Will Survive for the radio audience. We're surprised the MPR studio didn't explode from the awesomeness.

#4. Beer Jonesing - Dr. Patrick McGovern has circled the globe uncovering ancient alcohol recipes and flavors. Did you know that Egyptian laborers were given a daily beer ration? (You did if you watch Firefly. Which you should, gorram it). Maybe the "Indiana Jones of Beer" can crack his whip and suggest alcohol as a perk to modern day employers.
