Five Sci-Fi Sports We'd Like to See in the Olympics
Maybe someday all these will be possible. Hardcore film fandom and sports don't always go together, but with James Bond participating in today's opening ceremony for the 2012 Summer Olympics, it strikes us that there's more crossover potential than meets the eye. Not everything we have in mind is possible with today's technology, but we suggest people start figuring it out - these are the movie-inspired sporting events that would have us glued to our screens at any hour:
Quidditch (Harry Potter). If we could develop anti-gravity broomsticks using technology, the usual Harry Potter naysayers would no longer be able to cry witchcraft. But even if we don't ever get to that stage, there are fans who have figured out ways to get around the whole flying thing. Now, get around the whole "not being in the Olympics" thing, and Expecto Awesomus!
Light Cycles (Tron: Legacy version). The Olympics could use more motor-sports to begin with, and having a neon variety that can be raced at night solves any number of time-zone issues. Once that technology's worked out, we'll still have to decide if giving the athletes creepy, digital facelifts counts as illegal performance enhancing, but we'll leap that digital chasm when we come to it.
Ender's Games (Ender's Game). Zero-gravity team war simulations inside an orbiting space station, in which participants can paralyze each other with laser pistols. We'll see it all happen in movie form next year, but we want it now, for real.
Giant Mech Fights (Robot Jox). Like the Olympics, the "jox" battles in Stuart Gordon's 1990 film were designed to allow countries to compete against each other without going to war. And if you're going to spend a ton of money anyway, we'd use that cash to make giant robots who can fight. Then, once genetic science advances, we can introduce kaiju into the mix and throw down Pacific Rim style.
Thunderdome (Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome). Two men enter. One man leaves. Bungie harnesses involved. We'll figure out how to make it non-lethal later.
