Geek this Week: The Pros of Con

Some of our favorite announcements from San Diego.

TVNerd Mentality - For us, the obvious highlight of San Diego Comic-Con International was the Nerdist Channel Panel, in which we somehow managed to bring the likes of Neil deGrasse Tyson and Baba Booey together in the same room for a common cause. If you couldn't be there, you at least deserve to see the video that was shown previewing the channel's upcoming slate, featuring some things you already knew about - Neil Patrick Harris and puppets! Scott Ian and Fangoria! - and others you probably didn't, like Bill Nye, Cops: Skyrim and Holly Conrad and Jessica Merizan in Try This at Home. Plus, you'll never guess WHO our big get is this season for Chris Hardwick's All Star Celebrity Bowling - but if we win, there'll be lots of time to lord it over them.

TOYSAlien Resurrection - All hardcore toy collectors are familiar with Kenner's 18" Alien from 1979, removed from shelves when parents complained about its inappropriateness and destined to be a holy grail for action-figure aficionados ever since. But did you know that Kenner also planned a Star Wars-scaled line from the movie as well? It was scrapped after the controversy, but prototypes were made - and now Super7 toys is putting out exact reproductions, the way they would have looked back then. Unlike in the cinematic Alien universe, these engineers really do like their creations.

MOVIESLegendary Monsters - Legendary Entertainment made a giant-sized footprint in Hall H with new exclusive footage from Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, in which we got several glimpses of massive robots facing off against, hammer-headed, multi-limbed kaiju. And if that wasn't enough, a teaser for an all-new reboot of the grand-daddy of them all, Godzilla, had people cheering not just from the epic scale, but also because he looked like the big guy is supposed to look, with plating down the back and a small head. The footage was all exclusive to the show, but we can at least give you a good look at some Pacific Rim costumes from the convention floor.

GAMESDead, on Arrival - Never mind Ryan Reynolds; now you can play Deadpool! Or, more accurately, play as Deadpool in his new upcoming video game. Details are sparse beyond a gleefully smart-assed announcement video, but based on that and the game's official site, we can tell it's going to be full of the mouthy merc's tardemark humor, below-the-belt shots, cleavage and...chimichangas? Yes, even antiheroes know that chimichangas make everything better.

TOYSGame Not Over, Man! - The long wait is over, and we are finally getting a Bill Paxton action figure. That's right: NECA's bringing out a toy of Hudson from Aliens, with a hilarious "crying" facial expression. But it's our wallets that are going to be crying later this year, as the company also announced it has the rights to make 18" movie figures of The Avengers. Hulk? Smash our puny toy budget for the year.
