Geek this Week: BBCA FTW!

New Nerdist specials are coming to BBC America.

TVSpecial Relationship - Shortbread and tea. Time Lords and blue phone booths. Some things were just meant to go together, like Nerdist and BBC America, which kick off a new series of specials together this weekend. In fact, Saturday is being officially dubbed Sat-NERD-day, with a 12-hour Doctor Who marathon starting at 7 a.m., followed by four hours full of Nerdist goodness beginning at 7 p.m. with a re-airing of The Nerdist pilot episode, the Fades & Alison Brie episode and 2011's Year in Review. At 9 p.m., see the debut of The Nerdist: Comic-Con, featuring interviews with the cast of Doctor Who from the recent San Diego Comic-Con International, as well as in-studio appearances by Prometheus cowriter Damon Lindelof and Torchwood's John Barrowman. 10 p.m. brings The Nerdist: Tribute to Toys and Games as the crew will look at the newest collectibles, while Chris Hardwick plays Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock with Aisha Tyler. Who said nerdism and stiff upper lips don't mix? (Maybe nobody. But they'd be wrong if they had.)

TVThrone Together - Even in the middle of summer, winter is coming...to Blu-ray today. Yes, those of you without HBO, now you can finally catch up on all that stuff about Westeros and Peter Dinklage and Dothraki and all that other stuff that probably sounds incomprehensible out of context. We may be long past the point of spoilers on some things, but Game of Thrones is one show that rewards repeat viewings regardless, if only so you can figure out how to pronounce everybody's names correctly.

MOVIESKeeping America Schaffer - Akiva Schaffer, that is. Though his name hasn't been touted in ads for The Watch as much as those of "STILLER" or "VAUGHN," he's the man behind the camera, and the one that makes us want to see the movie the most. As director of the criminally underseen Hot Rod, as well as the much-more loved "Lazy Sunday" and other SNL digital shorts, this pal of Andy Samberg's has consistently proven that when it comes to comedy, it's Lonely (Island) at the top.

TOYSMattel's Manhattan Project - Speaking of "watch," the characters of Watchmen never got proper comic-based action figures back in the day, as DC Direct voluntarily canceled the line they had planned after Alan Moore told all his fans not to buy them. It's now years later, people have stopped listening to everything Moore says, and DC has decided to cash in with prequel comics, giving rise to more comic-related merch that includes new subscription-based toys via Mattycollector.com. They'll only be available online, and you have until August 6th to sign up for this "Club Black Freighter." Consider it a true Rorschach test of your loyalties.

TECHMad Scientist Alert! - We've watched enough movies to know that every time a mutant species is created in a lab, something goes horribly wrong. What, then, to make of the news that a rat-jellyfish hybrid has been created in order to, uh, maybe test heart drugs, or something? Money quote from the guy who did it: "I grabbed him and said, 'John, I think I can build a jellyfish.' He didn't know who I was, but I was pretty excited and waving my arms, and I think he was afraid to say no." Nothing scary about that at all, right?
