Spellbinding: The Most Bewitching Witches in Anime

Paying tribute to the ladies that put a spell on us.

Sunday, July 22nd, marks the thirteenth anniversary of Hayao Miyazaki double, double, toil and troubling over his creative cauldron to create the insta-classic Kiki's Delivery Service, which tells the story of a young witch striking out on her own. In honor of Kiki, who is one of the cutest witches in anime in her own right, we're celebrating the other animated ladies who cast a spell on us.

Chacha (Akazukin Chacha) - Did we say Kiki was the cutest? Chacha could certainly give her a run for her money, with her big brown eyes and delightfully funny, cute mishaps. Although she often gets her spells wrong, she always nails it when it counts, so we're happy to forgive her mistakes.

All the ladies (and fellas!) of the Magic Club (Magic User's Club) - How could we pick just one? From Sae's adorable clumsiness to Takeo's shameless showing off, each individual in the Magic Club has their own individual charms. We blame Pringles for the "once you pop, you can't stop" mentality and Magic User's Club for such an endearing group of spellcasters.

Robin (Witch Hunter Robin) - Okay, Robin's not technically a witch; she's what's called a "craft-user," but we can forgive any technicality for the sultry, forlorn charm she possesses. Plus, she eventually sympathizes with witches, so maybe we can consider her an honorary witch? Can't we all just get along?

Yubaba (Spirited Away) - What better way to pay tribute to anime witches than with everyone's favorite terrifying bathhouse matron? Sure, she's a nightmare to work for, she's mean to the lovable No-Face and her dumplings will transform your parents into beasts of burden. Actually, there's not much to like about her, but we're too scared to say anything mean, so all hail Yubaba!
