Weekly Round-up: Staging Studio Ghibli, Spaced Out Seiyuus and Fast Food Feats
Plus the recycled art of Yuji Honbori Mononoke Monologue - Of all the recent anime stage play adaptations, none had us as excited as Studio Ghibli's announcement that London would get a staged version of environmental epic Princess Mononoke next April. In development for a year in cooperation with Studio Ghibli, the production by Whole Hog Theater will feature giant puppets made from recycled materials, original music and probably copious amounts of fake blood.
Spacey Seiyuu - In one of the coolest casting decisions in recent memory, Space Brothers will feature the world's first voice acting performance from the cold, black reaches of space when Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Akihiko Hoshide will record a cameo as himself from the International Space Station for an upcoming episode. Remember, in space, no one can hear you scream, but they can definitely hear your "S" sounds popping, so take a step back from the mic, please.
Recycle of Life - In keeping with the Buddhist philosophy of reincarnation, Japanese sculptor Yuji Honbori gives what others might consider garbage new life by transforming discarded cardboard into sculptures of Buddhist deities and temples. The airy artwork gives new life to what would otherwise be left to rot, giving new meaning to the notion that one man's trash is, indeed, another man's treasure (or scale replica of a temple).
Truth or Dairy - Here in America, we pride ourselves on having the most gluttonous, decadent fast food imaginable, so you can imagine our mix of awe and shame when we heard that a man in Japan tackled a Burger King Whopper with an artery-clogging 1,000 slices of cheese. It should come as no surprise that this is the same guy who attempted to eat the 1,050 bacon-strip burger a few months ago, but it should come as a huge surprise that he's still alive. | | | |
